The POSS Test is an Edison Electric Institute (EEI) employment-test battery used to screen candidates for power-plant operator roles. Its official name is the Plant Operator Selection System. EEI associates POSS with operator positions in fossil, nuclear, and hydroelectric plants. Official EEI battery examples include power plant operator, control room operator, and nuclear reactor operator.
EEI develops and supplies employment tests to participating electric companies. EEI does not administer POSS directly to individual applicants. The hiring utility controls scheduling, delivery method, cutoff standards, retesting, result communication, score-transfer decisions, and accommodations. Common third-party descriptions identify Mathematical Usage, Mechanical Concepts, Figural Reasoning, and Reading Comprehension. Different forms or utility configurations may exist, so your invitation controls. JobTestPrep sells third-party POSS preparation. JobTestPrep is not EEI, a utility, a hiring employer, a nuclear licensing authority, or the official administrator.
The 45 questions on this page are original study exercises. They are not official EEI, POSS, POSS-C, utility-company, employer, testing-center, nuclear-operator, or JobTestPrep questions and do not reproduce a proprietary test form, scoring system, diagram, conversion table, or passage.
What Is the EEI POSS Test?
POSS stands for Plant Operator Selection System. It is an EEI employment-selection battery for operator pathways in electric power generation. It is an aptitude-style hiring assessment, not a plant-systems course, NRC operator license examination, reactor operator exam, senior reactor operator exam, or employer technical qualification.
Who Uses POSS?
Current EEI Employment Test Batteries documentation associates POSS with operator jobs in fossil, nuclear, and hydroelectric plants and lists examples such as power plant operator, control room operator, and nuclear reactor operator. These are official examples, not a complete list. Not every utility or operator vacancy uses POSS. Some employers add interviews, physical stages, background screening, plant-specific assessments, or later licensing requirements.
Utility example: Entergy’s public pre-employment testing page lists Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and a Power Plant Maintenance/Power Operator Selection System (POSS/MASS) combination among its EEI batteries. Confirm the assigned battery name in your invitation.
Does EEI Administer POSS Directly?
No. Current EEI Industry Training and Testing guidance states that EEI supplies tests to participating member companies and does not administer tests directly to applicants. Applicants deal with the hiring electric company. EEI does not provide results directly to applicants. Candidates who previously completed an EEI test should notify the new hiring company.

What Sections Are on POSS?
Traditional third-party descriptions identify four sections:
- Mathematical Usage
- Mechanical Concepts
- Figural Reasoning
- Reading Comprehension
Do not assume every current form uses identical item counts. Confirm the sections named on your invitation.
Mathematical Usage
Useful skills include arithmetic, decimals, fractions, ratios, basic algebra, formula rearrangement, unit conversion with supplied tables, word problems, and rates. JobTestPrep prepares candidates with separate Mathematical Usage Version 1 and Version 2 simulations. Those labels are preparation-product tracks. Do not assume every candidate takes both versions in one live session.
Mechanical Concepts
Useful aptitude themes include force, motion, levers, pulleys, gears, belts, friction, gravity, center of gravity, pressure, fluid behavior, heat, and simple circuit continuity. This is not plant-operation or maintenance instruction.
Figural Reasoning
Useful skills include sequences, comparisons, analogies, matrices, progression, rotation, reflection, position changes, count changes, fill changes, and combined visual rules. JobTestPrep names categories such as picture series, comparison, and progression for its own materials. Do not treat those product labels as confirmed official EEI public category names unless your brochure uses them.
Reading Comprehension
Useful skills include stated facts, main idea, vocabulary in context, sequence, cause and effect, supported conclusions, and distinguishing evidence from assumptions. Use only the information in the passage.
How Many Questions Are on POSS?
JobTestPrep currently describes a 146-question four-section structure (46 + 44 + 20 + 36). Current EEI public overview pages emphasize job-family purpose and administration rules rather than publishing that item count as a fixed consumer-facing specification. Treat 146 as a common third-party description unless your invitation or employer brochure states otherwise.
How Long Is POSS?
JobTestPrep publishes section timings that add to about 77 minutes (17 + 20 + 10 + 30). The same page also states that POSS takes approximately 2.5 hours. Those two figures are not the same. The longer estimate may include check-in, instructions, practice items, breaks, or other logistics, but that reconciliation is not confirmed by a current public EEI consumer timing table checked for this guide. Follow your invitation for appointment length. Do not treat unofficial practice timers on this page as official clocks.
Is POSS Online or Computer-Based?
EEI currently states that most EEI tests can have multiple delivery options, including paper, computer, and testing center. JobTestPrep states that POSS is “not available online.” Those statements are not the same claim:
- not available for independent public registration with EEI is consistent with EEI applicant guidance;
- computer-based testing at a utility or testing center is still possible under EEI’s multiple-delivery language;
- remote self-administered testing is not the same as supervised computer testing.
Your hiring utility’s invitation controls the actual method.
Can You Register Directly With EEI?
No. Candidates receive POSS through a hiring utility or authorized employer process.
Can You Use a Calculator?
JobTestPrep’s POSS page currently contradicts itself. One section says most utilities follow an EEI standard prohibiting calculators. A registration FAQ on the same site says a calculator is usually provided and policies vary. Neither of those universal claims is treated here as verified current EEI public candidate guidance. Calculator policy is utility-specific. Do not bring or use an unauthorized device. Confirm whether a calculator is supplied or banned using your invitation and proctor instructions.
Can You Use Scratch Paper or a Formula Sheet?
Scratch-paper and supplied-table rules are utility-specific or session-specific. Do not assume. Follow the invitation and proctor instructions.
Are Wrong Answers Penalized?
Some third-party materials state there is no penalty for incorrect answers. Follow the live instructions for your assigned form. Do not rely on a universal guessing strategy based only on JobTestPrep wording.
How Is POSS Scored?
EEI public materials emphasize that hiring companies handle applicant results. JobTestPrep describes an Aptitude Index from 0 to 15 built from section performance and says many employers communicate pass or fail rather than detailed numeric scores. Treat that index description as third-party wording unless your employer materials confirm it. Employers can set their own cutoffs.
What Score Do You Need?
There is no universal public cutoff that should be assumed for every utility and vacancy. Do not invent a higher universal nuclear cutoff without current primary employer evidence. Practice scores do not predict employer decisions, interviews, licensing, or offers.
Will You Receive Your Score?
EEI does not provide results directly to applicants. The hiring utility controls whether you receive a numeric score, section detail, or only progression language. Timing varies by employer.
Can POSS Scores Be Transferred?
Prior EEI testing may sometimes be considered by another company, but transfer is not automatic. Notify the new hiring utility and follow its authorization process. Entergy, for example, currently directs candidates who previously passed the required test elsewhere to complete an EEI Authorization to Release form and return it to Entergy’s candidate-testing contact. The receiving company decides whether a retest is required.
What Is the POSS Retest Policy?
Waiting periods and attempt limits are utility-specific. Do not publish 30 days, 90 days, or two attempts per year as universal.
Entergy example only: Entergy currently states that a minimum of 30 days must pass between the first and second attempt on the same EEI test, and that applicants may not take the same test more than twice in a twelve-month period. JobTestPrep attributes a 90-day wait to Duke Energy; confirm any Duke rule on Duke’s current candidate materials rather than treating that attribution as a universal EEI rule.
What Is POSS-C?
JobTestPrep describes POSS-C as a utility-assigned POSS variant that still uses the same four-section preparation themes. Public EEI overview materials checked for this guide emphasize POSS job-family purpose and do not provide a detailed consumer-facing POSS-C specification. Follow the exact form name on your invitation. Do not invent section counts for POSS-C beyond what your materials state.
Can POSS and MASS Be Administered Together?
Some employers may arrange combined POSS/MASS testing. Entergy publicly lists a POSS/MASS option among its EEI batteries. JobTestPrep also mentions combined sessions at some utilities. Combined administration is not universal. When BOTH batteries are named, prepare for both and use the dedicated EEI MASS Test guide for MASS content. Do not merge MASS practice into this POSS page.
POSS vs MASS
| Feature | POSS | MASS |
|---|---|---|
| Official focus | Power-plant operator positions | Power-plant maintenance positions |
| Example roles (EEI) | Power plant operator; control room operator; nuclear reactor operator | Mechanic; machinist; electrician; welder; pipe fitter |
| Interchangeable? | No | No |
POSS vs CAST
CAST targets construction and skilled-trade utility families such as transmission and distribution, facilities and equipment, and meter-related service. POSS targets plant-operator selection. See the EEI CAST Test guide.
POSS vs TECH
TECH targets technician occupations that commonly require an associate degree. POSS is an operator-selection battery. For TECH preparation, see the EEI TECH Test guide.
POSS vs SO/PDII
SO/PDII targets power-dispatching and energy-control-center roles. A system operator or dispatcher invitation is not automatically a POSS invitation.
POSS vs Nuclear Operator Licensing
POSS is a pre-employment selection battery. It is not an NRC operator license examination, reactor operator exam, senior reactor operator exam, or plant-specific systems qualification. Later nuclear licensing and training, when required, are separate processes.
For the wider EEI family, you may also review JobTestPrep’s overview of EEI employment tests.

Free versus Paid Preparation
Free preparation can help candidates identify the assigned EEI battery, review current EEI information, practise original mathematics, mechanical reasoning, figural reasoning, and technical reading, identify weak sections, and build timing gradually.
Paid preparation may help when the current JobTestPrep POSS product matches your need. On the live page checked for this update, the title is EEI POSS Test - Free Practice Questions & Complete Prep for Plant Operators 2026. Product SKUs currently include about $79 (1 week), $89 (1 month), and $99 (3 months). Labels such as Basic, Advanced, and Premium map to access duration on the checked sell flow. Sellbox messaging advertises one-time payment and 1-Month Access content including Mathematical Usage Version 1 (3 simulations), Mathematical Usage Version 2 (3 simulations), Figural Reasoning (3 simulations + 16 drills), Mechanical Concepts (2 simulations + 21 drills), and Reading Comprehension (2 simulations + 13 drills). That is 13 section simulations and 50 supplemental drills before counting the diagnostic and 3 study guides described in the longer product copy. Counting simulations + drills + diagnostic yields 64 practice resources if each listed resource is counted once; guides are additional study materials. Explanations, tracking, unlimited attempts during access, extension through customer service, and money-back language are JobTestPrep product claims, not EEI specifications.
