What a basic-skills assessment can cover

Ramsay’s public basic-skills material describes apprentice-level assessments that can cover literacy, arithmetic, inspection, measurement, process monitoring, and problem solving. The precise mix depends on the assessment selected by the employer. A question that looks simple can still be time-consuming when it requires close reading, unit conversion, or careful comparison of similar numbers.

Use the invitation, not a generic score chart, to identify the assigned form and rules. This page contains original practice items only. It does not reproduce a Ramsay assessment or establish a passing score.

Keep the test families separate

Basic skills practice emphasizes arithmetic, measurement, reading, and workplace problem solving. It is not Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test or MAT-5, which is an aptitude measure for learning production and maintenance activities rather than a technical knowledge test. It is also different from Ramsay Maintenance Test, which can cover applied mechanical, electrical, fluid-power, and troubleshooting knowledge, and Ramsay Electrical Test, which focuses on electrical and controls concepts.

If the invitation names an electrical basic-skills battery, do not assume it is the same as an electrical maintenance knowledge test. It may instead emphasize reading, arithmetic, inspection and measurement, and problem solving. Study the foundations first, then add technical content only when the employer identifies it.

How to study efficiently

Build accuracy before speed. Review fractions, decimals, percentages, common unit conversions, elapsed time, and arithmetic word problems. For reading questions, underline the instruction word that controls the answer: “before,” “after,” “only,” “unless,” or “must.” For measurement questions, write the unit beside each number so that inches, feet, minutes, and meters do not get mixed up.

After a timed set, classify each missed item. A calculation error needs a checking habit; an instruction error needs slower reading; a vocabulary error needs a short review list. That approach is more useful than repeatedly taking the same questions without examining why an answer was wrong.
