Ramsay’s public catalog and electrical-and-controls pages show that it offers multiple electrical assessments. That is why the employer invitation is more reliable than a universal question count or cutoff.
What employers may mean by “Ramsay electrical test”
Ramsay Corporation publishes more than one electrical and electrical-adjacent assessment. An employer might mean an entry-level electrical aptitude assessment, the Combined Basic Skills (Electrical) battery, an Electrical Maintenance Trainee form, or a job-knowledge assessment selected for a particular maintenance role. Those products are not interchangeable. For example, Ramsay describes Combined Basic Skills (Electrical) as a battery covering reading, arithmetic, inspection and measurement, and troubleshooting and problem solving. The exact title on your invitation matters more than an online label. Read the candidate instructions before choosing a study plan. They may identify the level, permitted materials, delivery method, or an employer-specific technical focus. Electrical Maintenance versus other Ramsay forms
It is different from:
- Ramsay Maintenance Test, which can include broader mechanical, fluid-power, and maintenance knowledge;
- Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test, often called MAT-5, which Ramsay presents as aptitude for learning production and maintenance activities rather than a test of existing electrical knowledge;
- Ramsay Basic Skills Test, which emphasizes foundational reading, arithmetic, measurement, inspection, and problem solving;
- EEI CAST Test, a utility construction and skilled-trades battery;
- Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude, a separate mechanical aptitude assessment.
An Electrical Maintenance assessment may therefore require you to recognize a relay, follow a simple schematic, interpret a safe measurement concept, or distinguish a control circuit from a load circuit. MAT-5-style practice is still useful for general mechanical reasoning, but it cannot replace review of electrical symbols, basic calculations, and controls.
Ohm’s law review
Ohm’s law connects voltage, current, and resistance: V = I x R. Rearranged, current is I = V / R and resistance is R = V / I. Keep units visible while practicing: voltage is measured in volts, current in amperes, and resistance in ohms. A second useful relationship is electrical power: P = V x I. Practice the arithmetic slowly first, then work on speed.
Do not treat a paper calculation as permission to make a real measurement or repair. Actual equipment can have stored energy, unexpected backfeed, arc-flash hazards, or site-specific rules that a practice question cannot represent.
Measurement tools: concepts, not live instructions
A multimeter is commonly associated with voltage, resistance, and continuity functions. A clamp meter is commonly used to observe current without opening a conductor, while a megohmmeter is associated with insulation-resistance testing. On an assessment, the question may ask which quantity a tool is intended to measure or what a reading suggests in a simplified circuit.
Tool choice, meter category, lead condition, setup, and verification are safety-critical in real work. Only qualified and authorized personnel should perform electrical testing, using the employer’s lockout/tagout, PPE, meter-verification, and electrical-safety procedures. Never use this guide as operating instruction.
Motors, controls, relays, and transformers
Motor questions often focus on cause and effect. Excess load, poor ventilation, binding, or a supply problem can contribute to overheating or overload trips. A contactor uses a control signal to switch a power circuit. A relay is also electrically operated, usually for control or signaling work. Normally open and normally closed describe a device’s resting, unactuated state.
A control transformer supplies a different voltage for a control circuit. In a simple starter circuit, a start button may energize a coil, auxiliary contacts may hold that command after the button is released, and overload contacts may interrupt the control circuit if an overload condition occurs. These are conceptual relationships only. Follow the drawing and the given facts rather than assuming every panel uses the same design.
