MI5 (the Security Service) publishes graduate, internship, specialist, technology, corporate and other vacancies through its careers site. Assessment routes vary by role and scheme. Official MI5 Careers pages and the live vacancy control eligibility, stages, timing and publisher tools. This guide is public-facing orientation only. It does not describe classified operational detail, and it does not reproduce live MI5 test content.
Public MI5 applying guidance states that candidates must be British citizens (dual nationality with a British component is still considered), can apply from age 17 but will not normally start before 18, and usually need UK residency for seven of the last ten years, with case-by-case assessment and common exceptions such as studying abroad, living overseas with parents, or serving with HM Forces. MI5 also states that discretion is vital: you should not discuss your application other than with your partner or a close family member, and you should only launch an application from within the UK. Vetting is a formal part of joining sensitive public-service roles; follow only what MI5 publishes for your vacancy.
Commercial candidate guides often describe multi-stage online assessments after application. Those guides commonly mention Cubiks / Talogy Logiks-style cognitive tests, PAPI-style personality questionnaires, situational judgement tests, and, for some pathways, a longer Online Investigative Assessment (often described as about 90 minutes of case-file comprehension). Assessment centres and interviews are also frequently described as later stages. Present those labels as third-party or candidate-reported orientation unless your MI5 vacancy names them. Always verify against MI5 Careers and your invitation.

Public eligibility and discretion notes
From MI5’s public applying materials (also summarised on official vacancy portals and employer profiles that quote MI5):
- You must be a British citizen to apply. Dual nationality that includes British citizenship is still considered. If successful, MI5 may impose restrictions related to the non-British nationality.
- You can apply from age 17. A successful candidate will not normally be offered a start date before their 18th birthday.
- You will usually need to have been resident in the UK for seven of the last ten years. Cases are assessed individually. Common exceptions can include studying abroad, living overseas with parents, or HM Forces service, with references for time abroad.
- Discretion is vital. Do not discuss your application other than with your partner or a close family member.
- Launch the application from within the UK. Applying from outside the UK can affect progression.
- Security best practice suggested publicly includes using a separate email address without obvious identifying details in the address string.
For full criteria, read MI5 Careers and the applying / eligibility pages linked from the vacancy you want.
How commercial guides often describe later stages
Treat the points below as orientation from commercial candidate materials, not as a confirmed checklist for every MI5 role:
- Online application and eligibility checks - Controlled by the live vacancy.
- Situational judgement - Scenarios testing integrity, discretion, analytical calm and professionalism.
- Cognitive ability - Timed verbal, numerical and abstract items. Guides often link this to Cubiks / Talogy Logiks formats for some specialist or analyst pathways. See also Cubiks Logiks Test.
- Personality / work-style inventories - Often described as PAPI-style questionnaires. Answer honestly.
- Online Investigative Assessment - Candidate guides often describe a longer case-file comprehension exercise (around 90 minutes) for some intelligence-officer style pathways. MI5 also publishes short public investigative-challenge style quizzes on its careers site for self-check interest; those are not the same as a live selection instrument unless your invitation says so.
- Interviews and assessment centre - Role-dependent. Follow only the invite pack.
- Vetting - A formal, thorough process for roles that require it. Honesty is essential. Do not invent classified vetting mechanics beyond official public wording.
How to prepare
- Read MI5 Careers and the specific vacancy eligibility text first.
- Confirm you meet the published nationality, age, residency and UK-based application rules, or understand how exceptions are assessed.
- Practise careful reading, proportionate inference and timed numerical logic without guessing beyond the evidence.
- For judgement items, prioritise integrity, discretion, accuracy and appropriate escalation.
- Answer personality items honestly.
- Use paid PrepPacks only as supplemental drills after official guidance.

Investigative reading and inference
Passage A (questions 1-4)
Harbour Council Facilities log, Monday 09:10-10:05 (fictional). At 09:12, receptionist N. Patel logged a courier who left a sealed envelope for “Project Lantern - for office manager only”. At 09:28, cleaner R. Okonkwo reported the staff kitchen window ajar, which was unusual because it is normally locked before 08:00. At 09:41, IT reported a brief Wi-Fi drop in meeting room B lasting four minutes. At 09:55, office manager S. Ellis collected the envelope from reception and signed for it. The log does not record whether the meeting room was booked. No CCTV stills are attached to this extract.
1. According to the log, who signed for the Project Lantern envelope?
A. N. Patel B. R. Okonkwo C. S. Ellis D. An unnamed courier
Correct answer: C
The extract states that office manager S. Ellis collected the envelope from reception and signed for it at 09:55.
2. The Wi-Fi drop in meeting room B lasted:
A. Two minutes B. Four minutes C. Ten minutes D. Cannot be determined from the extract
Correct answer: B
IT reported a brief Wi-Fi drop lasting four minutes.
3. Which statement is supported by the extract?
A. Meeting room B was booked for a Project Lantern meeting. B. The kitchen window being ajar was described as unusual. C. CCTV confirmed the courier’s identity. D. The Wi-Fi drop caused the courier delay.
Correct answer: B
R. Okonkwo reported the ajar window as unusual because it is normally locked before 08:00. The extract does not confirm room booking, CCTV identity or a causal link to the courier.
4. A colleague concludes: “The cleaner left the window open after stealing documents.” What is the best evaluation?
A. Proven by the log. B. Possible, but not established by the extract alone. C. Impossible because the cleaner signed for the envelope. D. Proven because of the Wi-Fi drop.
Correct answer: B
The log notes an unusual ajar window. It does not prove theft, motive or a link to documents.
Passage B (questions 5-8)
Fictional internal briefing for a civic archive digitisation trial. Three boxes were scheduled for scanning on Tuesday: Box Red (property deeds, 120 pages), Box Blue (staff rotas, 80 pages) and Box Green (public event photos, 200 images). Box Red arrived complete. Box Blue arrived with pages 41-45 missing. Box Green arrived a day early and was stored overnight in the locked temporary cage. The scanning vendor may only remove boxes after two authorising signatures. On Tuesday afternoon, only one authorising signature had been collected for Box Green.
5. How many pages were expected in Box Red?
A. 80 B. 120 C. 200 D. Not stated
Correct answer: B
Box Red is described as property deeds, 120 pages.
6. Which box had missing material on arrival?
A. Red B. Blue C. Green D. None
Correct answer: B
Box Blue arrived with pages 41-45 missing.
7. Can the vendor remove Box Green on Tuesday afternoon according to the rules in the briefing?
A. Yes, because it arrived early. B. Yes, because it is only photos. C. No, because only one authorising signature had been collected. D. Cannot Say, because cage storage voids the rule.
Correct answer: C
Two authorising signatures are required before removal. Only one had been collected.
8. Which inference is safest?
A. Box Green was stolen overnight. B. Box Blue’s missing pages prove insider theft. C. Box Red met the completeness check described. D. The vendor forged a signature.
Correct answer: C
The briefing states Box Red arrived complete. The other options go beyond the evidence.
Passage C (questions 9-11)
Fictional witness note from a park security volunteer, 18:40. “I saw two people near the equipment hut. One wore a blue jacket and carried a tablet. The other wore a grey coat and stayed on a phone call. They left before I reached them. I did not see either person enter the hut. Lighting was poor near the side path.” Separately, a groundsperson later found the hut padlock scratched but still locked at 19:10.
9. Did the volunteer see anyone enter the hut?
A. Yes, both people entered. B. Yes, only the person in blue. C. No, the volunteer did not see either person enter. D. The notes prove the hut was empty all evening.
Correct answer: C
The volunteer states they did not see either person enter the hut.
10. Which detail is stated about the padlock?
A. It was cut open. B. It was scratched but still locked at 19:10. C. It was replaced by a new lock. D. Fingerprints were taken from it.
Correct answer: B
The groundsperson found the padlock scratched but still locked at 19:10.
11. A supervisor claims both visitors definitely damaged the padlock. Best response based only on these notes?
A. Accept the claim because two visitors were seen nearby. B. Reject the claim because lighting was poor, so nobody was there. C. Treat the claim as unproven: proximity is recorded, but the notes do not establish who scratched the lock. D. Conclude the phone call proves guilt.
Correct answer: C
Presence near the hut and later scratch marks do not identify who caused the damage.
Numerical and logical cognitive-style items
12. An analysis team triages 96 reports in 8 hours at a constant rate. How many reports would it triage in 5 hours at the same rate?
A. 50 B. 55 C. 60 D. 65
Correct answer: C
Rate = 96 / 8 = 12 per hour. In 5 hours: 12 × 5 = 60.
13. Case priority ratios Open : Monitoring : Closed are 3 : 5 : 8. There are 320 cases in total. How many are Monitoring?
A. 80 B. 96 C. 100 D. 128
Correct answer: C
Parts = 3 + 5 + 8 = 16. One part = 320 / 16 = 20. Monitoring = 5 × 20 = 100.
14. Travel costs for three evidence-review visits are £48, £62 and £70. What is the mean cost?
A. £58 B. £60 C. £62 D. £64
Correct answer: B

15. A secure locker code sequence increases by 9 each time. The second code is 136. What is the fifth code?
A. 154 B. 163 C. 172 D. 181
Correct answer: B
From term 2 to term 5 is three steps of +9: 136 + 27 = 163.
16. Exactly 40% of 250 tip-offs are graded actionable. Of the actionable tip-offs, 1 in 5 need translator support. How many need translator support?
A. 20 B. 25 C. 30 D. 40
Correct answer: A
Actionable = 0.4 × 250 = 100. Translator support = 100 / 5 = 20.
17. If every sealed bag must be dual-signed before transfer, and bag K was transferred with only one signature, which conclusion follows if procedure was enforced?
A. Bag K was dual-signed after arrival. B. Bag K was not transferred under the enforced procedure. C. Bag K contained photos. D. Bag K was empty.
Correct answer: B
Under an enforced dual-signature rule, a one-signature transfer should not occur. The consistent conclusion is that the described transfer did not satisfy the enforced procedure.
18. Shift coverage: Ama works Wednesday or Thursday, not both. If Ben works Thursday, Ama works Wednesday. Ben works Thursday. When does Ama work?
A. Wednesday only B. Thursday only C. Both days D. Neither day
Correct answer: A
Ben on Thursday forces Ama onto Wednesday, and Ama cannot work both days.
19. A reading pack has 180 pages. You read 45 pages before lunch and one third of the remainder after lunch. How many pages remain unread?
A. 85 B. 90 C. 95 D. 100

After 45 pages, 135 remain. One third of 135 = 45 pages after lunch. Unread = 135 - 45 = 90.
20. Premises: All cleared visitors wear a dated pass. Jordan is a cleared visitor. Which conclusion must be true?
A. Jordan wears a dated pass. B. Only cleared visitors wear dated passes. C. Jordan was cleared yesterday. D. Jordan works permanently on site.
Correct answer: A
A rule about all cleared visitors applies to Jordan.
For ranked-response or work-style sections, cognitive ability test preparation may also be useful when you need extra drills under time pressure.

FAQ
Does every MI5 role use the same tests?
No. Routes vary by role and scheme. Official MI5 Careers and the vacancy control the stages. Commercial guides describing Logiks, PAPI, SJT or investigative case-file exercises should be treated as orientation until your invitation confirms them.
What eligibility rules are commonly published?
Public MI5 applying guidance covers British citizenship (dual nationality considered), applying from 17 with a normal start from 18, usual UK residency for seven of the last ten years with assessed exceptions, applying from within the UK, and discretion about who you tell. Always read the live official eligibility text.
Can I tell people I am applying?
MI5’s public applying guidance says you should not discuss your application other than with your partner or a close family member. Follow the official wording for your campaign.
What is the Online Investigative Assessment described in commercial guides?
Candidate prep materials often describe a longer case-file comprehension exercise for some pathways, sometimes around 90 minutes. That is third-party orientation unless named in your MI5 materials. MI5’s careers site also offers short public skills quizzes that are not automatically the same as live selection tests.
Can paid prep guarantee success?
No. Independent PrepPacks can support familiarisation with common question styles only. Selection, vetting and hiring decisions remain with MI5.
